Works of JSCE

Publication of Periodicals for Mutual Communication among Civil Engineers

JSCE has been publishing "Journal of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers" and "Proceedings of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers" monthly ever since its foundation for the mutual communication among civil engineers to promote the progress of technology. These periodicals have been valued eminently and attracting the attention of not only civil engineers and mass media but also personnel engaged in public works and the establishment of social capital. JSCE also publishes "Civil Engineering in Japan" in English annually and many publications for overseas readers, contributing to the international communication in civil engineering and technology.

Editing of Books and Publications on Civil Engineering

The Publishing activity of JSCE has produces a great number of books and printed materials in addition to the periodicals since its foundation. The recent expansion of published items is one of the most remarkable trends of the society. These publications include the summaries of studies and researches executed by diverse committees and even those produced by special editorial committees. "Handbook of Civil Engineering", "Standard Specifications for Concrete", "Standard Specifications for Tunnel", "Hydraulic Formula" and so on indicate the technical standards of the field of civil engineering, authorized as indispensable and fundamental documents contributing to the technological progress of this field.

Open "Place" for Presenting the Results of Studies and Researches

A large number of committees are set up in JSCE to implement studies and researches on specialized subjects. Some committees are assigned to hold meetings on necessary occasions such as lecture assemblies, training sessions, symposiums, conferences, and panel discussions, to provide the members with opportunities to present the results of their original studies and researches. In addition, JSCE is also attentive to promote the popularization of knowledge on civil engineering technologies through field study trips visiting construction sites, film exhibitions and other events.

Institution of Awards to Promote the Development in Civil Engineering and Excellent Research

The institution of awards to promote the development in civil engineering and to encourage excellent research in one of the most excellent research in one of the most important projects of JSCE. At first, it started as the Civil Engineering Society Prize, in 1920. As JSCE Prize, there are at present eight categories of prize; Distinguished Service Award; Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award; Thesis Prizes; Incentive Prize; Innovative Technique Award; Book of the Year Award; Yoshida Prize(commemorating Dr. Tokujiro Yoshida) for excellent research in concrete engineering; Tanaka Prize(commemorating Dr. Yutaka Tanaka) for excellent bridge work or bridge engineering.
In 1964 "JSCE Film Competition" was started on its 50th anniversary.

Civil Engineering Library Open to Public

The Civil Engineering Library established for the purpose of collecting and storing books and documents on civil engineering possesses approximately 30,000 items. "The Inventory of Library" is published by the library as well. It is one of the substantial libraries of its kind in the world. This library is the exclusive one open to not only personnel involved with civil engineering but also the general public, and has been collecting even historical materials as cultural artifacts, while functioning as an "information center" by steadily accumulating contemporary documents. On the other hand, the "Film Library" for audio-visual education, founded to encourage the popularization of knowledge and the promotion of technologies, is also open to the general public.

International and Domestic Communication with Relative Academic Societies and Associations

JSCE has been positively extending international sociality by engineers and researches in membership since its foundation. JSCE's contribution to technological advancement has been made from a global standpoint by developing a wide range of activities such as international conferences, invitation of overseas engineers and so forth, to promote communication of technical information with relative academic societies and association in foreign countries.
Mutual visits between JSCE and overseas institutions of civil engineering function as propelling power for international communication. A delegation is organized every year in order to expand and deepen the knowledge and expertise of the members of JSCE by observing overseas facilities and construction sites in the field of civil engineering.
JSCE also promotes cross-disciplinary communications with academic societies and associations of adjacent fields through co-sponsoring study sessions and symposiums as well as endorsing similar occasions held by them.

Cooperation in the Construction of Social Capitals

Various committees in JSCE have executed distinguished spectra of studies and researches commissioned by public agencies. These committees have been playing the central role in the construction projects of national scale by studying and evaluating basic technologies through discussions from the specialized viewpoints as well as planning the organizational management of subdivided categories of JSCE. They have been engaged tin numerous national construction projects such as Honshu-Shikoku Bridges, Seikan Tunnel and Narita International Airport, greatly contributing to the establishment of social capitals with responsible proposals from a balanced standpoint.
