Special Talk on Civil Engineering in the Ocean
Special talk on civil engineering in the ocean is held occasionaly. When scheduled, detailed information will appear on this homepage. Currently, no talkes are scheduled. On April 16 in 2007, a special talk entitled `Basic Law of the Sea and Us' was given by expertises at the JSCE Hall in commemoration of the enforcement of the law on July 16, 2007. The Basic Law of the Sea, providing a national legal framework for peforming a comprehensive policy cocerned with the sea, will have a great influence on the field of civil engineering in the ocean. We would like to take this opportunity to challenge ourselves for breakthrough technologies in our field.

Annual Symposium on Civil Engineering in the Ocean
The 36th symposium will be held from June 30 to July 1, 2011, in Matsuyama, Japan
The 35th symposium was held from June 24 to 25, 2010, in Kagoshima, Japan
The 34th symposium was held from June 29 to 30, 2009, in Yokohama, Japan
The 33rd symposium was held from July 1 to 2, 2008, in Kurashiki, Okayama, Japan.
The 32nd symposium was held from July 10 to 11, 2007, in Nagasaki, Japan.
The 31st symposium was held from July 12 to 13, 2006, in Otsu, Shiga, Japan.

Summer School
We organize a summer school for local citizens every year just before or after the annual symposium. The aim of the school is to enhance public understanding and involvement in utilization, environmental conservation, and disaster prevention in the ocean. The participants gather mostly at a local coast, port, or research institute and discuss on ocean affairs with voluntary young researchers.
In 2007, the school was held on July 9 at Nagasaki Port.
In 2006, the school was held on July 14 in Otsu, Shiga, focusing on matters associated with Biwa Lake.

Special Session
Special sessions are organized in the annual symposium to offer a place to discuss the breakthrough methodologies for innovation in ocean science and technology. In addition to sharing the state of the art technology, your contribution leading to technical innovation is highly appreciated.
  • 2006: Strategy for introducing asset management; Toward implementation of adaptive management
  • 2005: Learning from historical ports; Coastal disaster prevention (Recovery from tsunami disastes and development of tsunami disaster resistant city; Toward implementation of adaptive management
  • 2004: Taking precautions against expected huge earthquakes and tsunamis; Recreation in the ocean
  • 2003: Elemental and environmental conservation technology sustaining development of offshore airport; Application of a new design tool based on numerical methods; 自然共生事業 (Toward building public consensus); Environmental assessment and measures against oil spills
