PREFACE

In 1998 the JSCE concrete committee set up a research committee on the upgrading of concrete structures with use of continuous fiber sheets for establishing the reed and the test methods with support of the TAMPOKEN.

Research works on continuous fiber reinforcing materials, Such as bar types of carbon Fibers and aramid fibers, have been conducted in the JSCE concrete committee since 1989, and their results are published in "Concrete Library 72" in 1992 and in "Concrete Library 88" in l996. English versions for both publications are available.

After the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, continuous fiber Sheets have been attracted for repair or Strengthening materials for existing concrete structures. Extensive efforts have been made on the application of the sheets in the engineering field, such as authorities of road and rail way as well as universities.

Looking over the current situation of FRP sheets application, the JSCE concrete committee decided to summarize the state of the art on FRP sheets in Japan and to make a unified recommendations for design and construction of upgrading concrete structures by FRP sheets. It was also considered to distribute it worldwide for contribution to the engineering field of FRP Sheets in the world.

In order to proceed the task on the research committee, the following 6 Sub-committees were provided with leaders described.

SC 1: Frame work   ( chairman: Dr. Shima, H.)

SC 2: Design       ( chairmen: Dr. MutsuyoShi, H. and Dr. Shimoinura, T.)

SC 3: Construction  ( chairman: Dr. Ono, S.)

SC 4: Test Methods  ( chairman: Mr. MatSumoto, N.)

SC 5: Design examples ( chairman: Dr. Niwa, J.)

SC 6: Arrangement of data ( chairman: Dr. Uji, K.)

Some of the working results have already been presented in the FRPRCS-4 symposium, Baltimore in 1999.

The completion of the task and the publish of the report owe greatly to the members of the research committee, in particular chairmen in SC'S as well as Dr. Ueda, T., the secretary of the committee. Without their devotion this report would be impossible to complete. Many thanks Should be paid to them.
